ARCHIVES

DUE TO COVID, OUR ARCHIVES ARE TEMPORARILY CLOSED.

If you make an online enquiry we will try to help you access the materials remotely but unfortunately we are limited in our capacity to help due to challenges with volunteers over COVID.

The museum holds in excess of 10,000 photos and illustrations, 10,000+ books, pamphets and documents.  We do not allow direct access to the archives but our volunteers will search our catalogues for what you’re looking for and go into the archives themselves to access the documents, photos or books you’re requesting.  We’re happy to then photocopy them for you or you can look at them yourself in person with appropriate handling provisions.

If you think the Archives may contain material of interest, please complete an enquiry in the form below providing as much information as possible about the subject / topic of interest. We will let you know what we have available then you can decide whether you want to come and look in person or whether the information we can provide you online is adequate.

We do not charge for an initial enquiry on what we’re holding but if you want physical access to or copies of the documents, photos etc, we do charge a base rate of $20 then 40c per page for photocopying (for what you want copied) to access items you order in advance.  This cost includes one of our volunteers being available to assist you with viewing, handling or copying those items at the time you nominate in your booking.  If you then want access to more items while you’re there, these can be provided at a cost of $5 half hour plus copying charges.

We also have available copies for sale of Gwen O’Callaghan’s “Clonmel to Federation” which documents all the people who came through Port Albert between when the Clonmel sank (1841) and Federation (1901).  It comes in 3 volumes at a cost of $100 plus postage.  You can look at a copy of these volumes at the museum for a donation.  If you want to order a copy, make an enquiry on the form below or email portalbertmaritimemuseum@gmail.com and we can organise the purchase and delivery
