Statement of Purpose

The Port Albert Maritime Museum celebrates the history of Port Albert and its surrounding areas from prehistoric times to the present day, as well as the maritime history of Gippsland,  using the distinctive historic building that houses the museum and the diverse museum collection.  Through inspiration, learning and enjoyment, we will help the local community and its visitors to understand their past and ask questions about the present and future.  The Port Albert Maritime Museum Committee will maintain the museum as a tourist attraction and continue its development as an cultural educational facility for the benefit of the local community and visitors to the town.

The Statement of Purpose is a strategic rather than a regulatory statement.  The “Purpose” as outlined below in our constitution is legally binding and our actions must be governed by this purpose.  It deals more with WHAT we do more than HOW, WHY or FOR WHOM we do it.  The reason for a “Statement of Purpose” is that it adds a bit more of that how, why and for whom and also priorities which may change over time.  It must be consistent with the legal Purpose of course but adds nuances and priorities
